Does anyone else notice in America that liberalism, culture and religious tolerance has to do with your?

proximity to large bodies of water, and why is this, for instance it is well known that the west coast is the most religiously tolerant and liberal place and the east coast is the same as religiously diverse and tolerant and the area near the great lakes mostly near the coasts in several states comes in as the most liberal diverse and tolerant part of the Midwest (though not quite as tolerant or diverse as the coasts though with some places like areas in Chicago, Madison, Sagatuck (a not so well known gay artists liberal resort town actually the most liberal place I have seen anywhere to be honest and I have been to many places in the country in Michigan I recently visited on vacation and was impressed by) and Ann Arbor. being a lot like what I saw on the east coast when I visited my cousin who lived there. Is this a coincidence also all the other liberal. The other thing I noticed in a lot of these places was hilly terrain.
