1994 crown vic not running on all cylinders?

when i accelerate slow it does ok but when i accelerate fast it skips and pings and after it goes into overdrive it starts to jerk really bad then once it gets up to speed it does fine i changed the fuel filter but i've never had a tune up since i purchased the car 3 years ago for $600 and one more thing the catalytic converter started to knock really bad about a 2 months ago then it stopped on its own just wondering would that have anything to do with it
